I have always interested in life style of farmers, especially in China. They live in their own ancient ritual and only recently that they are upgrading to more scientific way of farming. The government is pushing modern, scientific farming for sometimes now. Industrial farming is coming of age in China in the farming regions. But there are still millions of farmers still living in their own way but with added use of chemical when they farm. Their way of living is primitive, especially in remote regions. I had once went to a village that I had to walk for two hours, climbing two mountains to get to the village. Their kids walk the same route to go to school everyday, because the school is closer to the town center. The town center had no more than a bunch of houses with school and other facilities.
I photographed the environment, the characters in the villages and their way of life. There are only elders and kids in most of the villages. The working age group are missing with only a few exceptions. This group of people left their villages working in huge factories, restaurants and in many varieties of the service industry far away from their home.
The city of Shanghai is expanding in a rapid pace. The farming villages closer to the city boundary are varnishing. The lands are being converted to either into industrial complex or residential complex. The lifestyle of the farmers in the vicinity of Shanghai is a lot more advanced than those in the remote villages. They shop in super stores and probably have flat panel TVs at home. They are waiting for compensation of their land when real estate developers coming in to develop the farm land into commercial properties.
